My Grading Scale for Fall 2007

It's finals week and I'm overwhelmed, so instead grading the old-fashioned way (actually reading student work), here's my new scale.

A: Student turned in something sweet for me along with the final paper.

B: Student's first or last name has positive connotations for me.

C: When I see student's name on final exam, I can't remember his/her face.

D: Final exam/paper is written in nearly illegible handwriting.

F: Student asked to take the final exam at a different time so s/he can get home sooner for Christmas.

Any ideas for pluses and minuses?

  • pluses for compliments on your hair and/or shoes

minuses for any time you noticed him or her texting, dozing, or working on an assignment for a different class during your class

  • Pluses for good grooming. Minuses for obvious attempts at brownnosing via enthusiastic nods every time eye contact is made.

Minuses for any use of emoticons or texting language: "lol" = automatic F.

  • Extra credit for any student who correctly uses "Ironic" as an example of irony, not coincidence. Automatic F for any student who uses "myself" when "me" or "I" should be used.

  • I am an ESL teacher at a university. My students are trying to pass the TOEFL to get into a university. They write things like "I was born and bred in Beijing." or "Should the TOEFL test have good English skills?" Reading their essays is exhausting and hilarious.
I tell them that an interesting essay covers a multitude of grammatical sins and syntax errors.

  • I find it ironic that Colleen and Carla both posted comments. "Colleen", "Carla", and "comments" all begin with the letter c, which is an additional irony, at least to myself.

  • Pluses for anyone who can, as an independent reseacrh assignment, correctly and thoroughly outline a successful plan for combining motherhood and an academic career. For anyone who can get that to Jenell and Maria before the new year, an actual grade increase.

Minuses for anyone who thinks this assignment is stupid.

(I had to delete and revise my first comment, as it looks pretty silly for a post about grading to have 3 spelling/gramatical errors. Silly enough to get you a minus.)

  • Actual grade reduction to anyone who misspells a word in a comment about revising a comment with spelling errors.

  • Maria, I'm going to have to give you a D. Sorry.

  • Oooh! Oooh! I can't correctly and thoroughly outline a successful plan for combining motherhood and an academic career, but I can point you in the direction of an awesome book on the subject! :)

  • An idea for combining grading with motherhood. My 6 year old son, after watching me grade essays night after night during his TV time, has taken to putting a grade on any paper he finds. My grocery list: F, with a big circle around it. Agendas for meeting, F, with a big circle. So, I suggest we just let our children grade our students' papers. It's like combining work with family time, or an ongoing "take your kid to work" experience. The only drawback, of course, is my students will not fare well, as my son never gives anything above an F! On the other hand, not only will this idea combine work and home life, it could help the grade inflation problem as well!

  • LOL!! This was funny. As a graduating senior at the University of Texas, I think all seniors should automatically get a plus... :)
